Web design color scheme is a certain combination of colors which serves as a basis for development of website design. Web design color scheme may consist both of a couple of colors and of an entire “rainbow” set. Everything depends on the goals and tasks which have been set for a particular website.
As a matter of fact, styles of website design may be quite various, and often even unpredictable. We can even say that every individual custom website design is a particular style of web design. However, different styles of web design may have something in common – for example, a web design color scheme. And color schemes may be subdivided into several types according to different criteria.
For example, according to the color gamma all web design color schemes are divided into dark, light, colored, and multicolored ones. In dark color schemes dark colors and their shades prevail, in light color schemes white color is predominant. In a colored web design color scheme there is one “leading color” (but not black or white). At last, in a multicolored color scheme there are two or more different main colors.
Website visitors may perceive a web design color scheme in a neutral, positive or negative way. The group of color schemes that evoke strong emotions in the site visitors is usually called bright, and color schemes that are not notable for pronounced perception belong to the group of neutral color schemes.
The choice of a web design color scheme may also depend on the amount of graphics on the site, amount and arrangement of textual content, topic of the site etc.
It is highly recommended to use no more than 3 or 4 different colors and their shades in a web design color scheme otherwise the abundance of different (often contrasting) colors in the web design of the site distracts the visitors from the main content of this site.
When you choose a web design color scheme, you should also keep in mind that, firstly, the same colors are able to evoke different associations in different people and, secondly, the degree of influence of the colors used in web design color scheme on the site visitors depends on the brightness and depth of these colors.
For example, the so-called pure colors (colors without extraneous impurities) have the maximum influence on people. As a rule, six such colors are singled out: red, green, blue, yellow, cyan, and magenta. Yellow and red colors have the strongest influence on our perception (provided that all colors have the same brightness and occupy the same amount in the web design color scheme.
To make the web design color scheme look harmonious, you should balance the colors that comprise its basis. For example, if two opposite colors – a warm and a cold one – have a 1:1 correlation, the warm color may look up to four times brighter as compared to the cold one even though their real brightness is the same. If the correlation is 2:1 and the cold color predominates the colors are balanced.
When you choose a web design color scheme you should take account of the goals and tasks that have been set for the site, the preferences of the site target audience. You should also keep in mind that dark colors always look “heavier” than light ones, that saturated colors look “heavier” as compared to subdued, pastel shades.
