Web design styles may be quite various. You may come across all kinds of web design on the World Wide Web: minimalistic website design with strict rows of black letters on the snow-white background, or “color explosion” that strikes your imagination. There are a lot of different web design styles and trends. The specialists of WebStudio2U will tell you about some of them.
Web design styles may be classified according to several criteria. For example, according to the color gamma all web design styles split into dark, light, colored, and multicolored.
Dark web design is represented by black, dark blue, gray shades, and light web design, in its turn, is represented by white, beige, off-white shades. In colored web design one color (but not black or white) predominates, in multicolored web design there are several bright and saturated dominating colors.
According to the amount of graphics web design styles may be divided into pure, standard and artistic. In pure web design of sites there is a minimal amount of non-informative graphic elements: a logo, some icons or buttons. Websites with pure web design are concentrated on the informative content.
Standard web design (as far as the amount of graphics is concerned) is a web design where graphics is used only in some elements of design, for example, in the header of the site. It is one of the most widespread web design styles.
Artistic web design is concentrated on graphics; graphics is its leading element. Such website design is intended to attract attention, make the website stand out from the crowd, improve its memorability. As a rule, websites with artistic web design are associated with creativity, freedom of thought and action.
According to the character of arrangement of content on the site web design of sites may be divided into web design with minimal, two- and three-column, or complex structure. Website design with minimal structure is concentrated on the only one main element. Two-column or three-column structure is the most widespread: narrower columns are designed for the menu or/and the news block, a wider column is designed for the main content of the site.
Complex structure of website design is used, as a rule, for large informative projects, for example, Web portals. Such website may contain a lot of columns, blocks, panels etc.
Web design styles may also split into groups according to the subject sphere of the site. Such division is the most understandable and associative one. For instance, what would you imagine if you saw futuristic robots, hi-tech mechanisms and devices on a website? Your first association will be a company that works in the field of information technologies (IT), scientific and technical research etc.
According to the subject sphere of websites the most widespread and strongly pronounced web design styles are:
- classical style;
- retro style;
- grunge style;
- futuristic style;
- cartoon style;
- magazine (newspaper) style.
Classic web design refers to website design which is the most widely used in a certain period of time. For example, modern Web 2.0 web design may be called the classics of our times.
Retro web design uses various elements from the past decades. These may be interior objects, specific decorations, special retro fonts, artificially aged textures etc.
Grunge web design is deliberately chaotic and slipshod. As a rule, it is designed in dark and dim shades. Typical elements of grunge web design include various spots, shabby elements, diffused fuzzy lines, “rumpled” textures and backgrounds, special “grunge” fonts etc.
Cartoon web design is most often associated with goods and services for kinds, lightness, carelessness. Cartoon heroes and comic-strip characters, other cartoon elements are frequently used in such web design.
Magazine web design is similar to design of “glossy” magazines: large headings, large photos, similar structure of columns. Such website design is often used for websites of the majority of “offline” magazines, design of electronic magazines which exist only on the Internet. Magazine web design is also typical for websites for women devoted to beauty and fashion, human relationships, home and family goods.
When you choose a web design style for your new website, you should not be guided by only one of the above-listed criteria: it is the goals and tasks of the site that should determine its future design in the first place. Besides, if your company already has its corporate identity (company logo, colors, fonts), it must be taken into account during the choice of a web design style.
