Unconventional web design

Unconventional web design In the sphere of web design there exist certain traditions that are conditioned by practical experience of many specialists. However unconventional web design finds its use in increasing frequency. Web designers and site owners consider it a way to stand out against a background of more traditional websites.

Unconventional web design belongs to the so-called avant-garde school of web design. This trend in web design presupposes development of websites using the newest technologies and aspiring to amaze the site visitors.

Unconventional web design is often based on the principles of unpredictability and chaotic character. When web designers develop such design they deliberately disregard existing rules and “canons” of web design.

What can unconventional web design give the visitors? There exists a great number of sites on the World Wide Web, and many of these sites resemble each other and look like twins. Unconventional approach to website design allows to relieve the monotony of traditional websites, attract visitors with the freshness of the idea, play on their curiosity.

However, not all the visitors are ready to rack their brains over unusual design of a site, its interface. If website design is unpractical and inconsistent many visitors may remain dissatisfied and will rather leave the incomprehensible site than try to understand what it's all about.

Site visitors are accustomed to particular appearance of the main site elements. For example, underlined text is perceived as a hyperlink. Site visitors are used to search for the menu in the left or top part of the menu. When usual elements are relocated to unusual places, when usual external appearance changes, site visitors may get confused and entangled.

As a rule unconventional web design contains a lot of complicated elements, therefore such decision may not only make the site inconvenient to use, but also cause certain technical problems. If the source code of the site pages is very tangled (they call it spaghetti code), there is practically no opportunity to carry out further modernization or redesign of the site, as no one will be able to understand the source code except its developer.

Thus unconventional web design may be very risky, and you should be very careful while using it. For example, the benefit of unconventional web design for corporate resources or representative websites that are oriented towards a peculiar task is very doubtful. You should take into account that target visitors of such sites may be conservative; quite often they are not ready to understand and accept original non-traditional web design. Such visitors find functionality of sites much more important than web design.

On the other hand, unconventional web design is appropriate in those cases where the prior task is to attract attention of the site visitors, amaze them. Unconventional web design may be very useful for entertaining websites, for web portfolios of designers, artists or photographers etc.
