Use of templates in web design

We can bet you have encountered practically identical sites while surfing the net. Moreover, you have encountered such sites not once and even not twice. But do not hurry to blame owners of these sites in impertinent plagiarism. It is more likely that they have used the same template of website design. Modern web industry offers a great many of such templates. They can be devoted to different subjects and be expensive, cheap or even free. Let us try to clear what a “website template” is.

A word “template” is usually understood as a certain workpiece (compare with Normal.dot template in MS Word documents), a standard (according to Wikipedia). In particular, a template of a site is a professionally developed workpiece of a site which can be filled with content at your discretion. A template includes HTML code of page design which can undergo further editing. All images, animation, special service files (style sheets, executable scripts) are developed by professionals of web design studios (web programmers, web designers, layout specialists responsible for html coding). If a template is paid, all necessary files are included. If a template is free, you will have to content yourself with a file which contains html code.

Why can templates be useful?

It is a good question. We can answer it: impetuous progress has affected even the laziest users. Now almost everyone wants to have his own website. However price for development of a professional individual website can be unaffordable. How to find a way out? In this case it is ready-made templates that can help you. Prices for ready-made templates are a real gift in comparison with the cost of complete development of a website “from scratch”. Even if you are not frightened by the price for individual web design, time spent for its development may play against you. While you are still going to make your site, smart competitors have already bought a template (or even downloaded it for free) and start active promotion of their websites in a couple of days.

How are templates made?

Let us try to figure it out. The first step on the way of creating a good template is development of design layout. During this stage designer thinks out graphic elements of the template, their arrangement and color gamma, and chooses appropriate fonts. Popular graphic packages (Adobe Photoshop, CorelDraw etc) are used to edit graphics. The next stage of making website template is making up html code that corresponds to the design layout which has been chosen earlier. If is important to keep in mind that besides main page website templates consist of some internal pages. Internal pages can be represented by photo sections, different polls, registration forms and so on. That is why layout specialists can use special html editors for their convenience. These editors allow to visualize and quicken code development. Ready-made templates are intended for those users mainly who do not know html at all or know it quite superficially. That is why web developers connect the template with the content management system as it permits to manage a website without deep knowledge of html.

Now it is high time to discuss the sphere of use of website templates. As we have already clarified, templates are most useful for low-budget projects when the customer has no money but he wants to get a good site. However template sites must not be knowingly considered low-quality. Catalogs of ready-made templates which belong to the most of web design studios provide “premium” templates. They are expensive and stylish. Such templates can meet even the most demanding requirements of customers. These catalogs also provide a list of various topics: education and science, business, medicine, art, entertainment, automobiles etc. Therefore website templates can be used everywhere. You can find a template devoted to practically any subject in the Web. If you cannot find an appropriate template, you can derive benefit from such feature of ready-made templates as their almost complete customizability. You can change images, color gamma and fonts, arrange menus and modules as you wish.

P.S. Despite all customizability of paid and free templates they do not become individual solutions and no none can guarantee that the same template is not used by your competitors.
