Web design development includes graphics layout on the site. But first images are processed and optimized with the help of special web design software – graphical editors. Professionals use Adobe Photoshop package for web design. However, this software product is paid. Is there a worthy alternative among free graphics editors?
GIMP
GIMP is short for the GNU Image manipulation program. This free software raster graphics editor has been initially developed for Linux systems, but now Windows versions of the product are also available. GIMP is almost as functional as Photoshop: it permits to work with filters, adjust levels, curves, color saturation and color balance of an image etc. GIMP works with a great number of formats including PSD though it works with this format in a different way than Photoshop. GIMP's native format XCF is designed to store an image including all features specific to GIMP such as layers, channels and vectors. GIMP supports multilingual interface.
Paint.NET
Paint.NET is a proprietary freeware raster graphics editor program for Microsoft Windows, developed on the .NET framework. In contrast to its nearest relative, standard Paint, Pain.NET editor provides considerably wider opportunities being very compact. Functional of Paint.NET includes opportunities both in drawing and photo editing. The program includes different filters such as blur or removal of red-eye effect. But image export is complicated due to the fact that this software product which cannot be read by other graphics editors. Users have to convert processed images into other formats. During this process all formatting elements are lost. Modern versions of Paint.NET support PSD format and contain some useful plugins, for example, Shape3D, which renders a 2D drawing into a 3D shape.
Image Analyzer
This free graphics editor is good for image analysis, editing and enhancement. Image Analyzer includes such useful functions as jpeg filter (intended for removing compression artifacts in jpg format) ans adaptive noise reduction (for noise suppression). There is also a function of automatic brightness, contrast, gamma and saturation adjustment. It can read and write such formats as BMP, ICO, CUR, WMF, EMF, PNG, MNG, GIF, PCX, JPEG and JPEG 2000 images and read CR2, RAS, PNM, PGM, PPM, HIPS and Matlab files. It is suitable both for simple image editing and creative experiments thanks to some advanced features.
PhotoFiltre
PhotoFiltre is one more program which can be useful for web design. It is a free lightweight alternative to more complicated graphics editors. Among the peculiarities of PhotoFiltre we can name image explorer – a special tool which permits to choose images from the folders in a very quick and convenient way and maintains work with several images simultaneously. The program supports only RGB and indexed color. Like any self-respecting image editing application, PhotoFiltre includes the most widely used filters to transform your image such as sepia. Quick contrast/hue and saturation buttons permit you to check out the effects and immediately and easily correct the image if you are not satisfied with its quality. PhotoFiltre covers the majority of image formats and can batch process and convert images rapidly. PhotoFiltre contains all the essential tools and options to edit and optimize pictures. It loads up very quickly and changes can be instantly previewed. Unfortunately, PhotoFiltre does not include layers.
Of course the list of free graphics editors is not limited by software products which are described above. Although their functionality and opportunities are somewhat poorer than that of expensive paid analogs, they permit to edit and optimize images for web design quickly and easily. These graphics editors are free so you will also save your money.
