New query language in Yandex

The query language allows to formulate the search queries in the most precise way taking into account the tiniest nuances of the search engine behavior. With the help of the query language you can make up complex queries regulating the distance between the words, the word order, joint occurrence of words etc.

The updated language meets two major requirements to a good query language:

• availability of special search operators must not disturb those users who do not use the query language or are not aware of its existence at all (minimization of false operations);
• the syntax of these operators must be convenient for those who use it.

After the update of the language the number of false operations has been decreased due to the new query parsing algorithms. Besides, some new search operators have been added to the old ones, for example:

• search taking into account the omitted word (with the help of the “joker” operator): “Charles * Dickens”;
• search within the range of the attribute values: Vancouver Olympics date:20100214..20100216.

In the nearest future Yandex is planning to support both new and older version of the query language. A full transition to the new language will be announced additionally.
