Yandex adds foreign content to its search index

On May 19, 2010 the administration of the well-known search engine proclaimed a press release where the launch of the search on foreign websites on yandex.ru was announced.

The users of the system obtained an opportunity to enable the global search filter and limit their search only to foreign websites. In the common search mode the priority is given to local websites as before.

Yandex also launched the experimental alpha version of yandex.com for testing new search algorithms. The developer team plans to add rich media results to the foreign search in the nearest future.

Ochir Mandzhikov, the press secretary of Yandex, said that new search features were intended first of all for the Russian-speaking users, and the company did not not plan to show the search engine to the world market.

Currently the search base of Yandex includes almost 10 billion pages. Foreign index that has been replenished during the last two years contains 4 billion pages with 80% of these pages being in English. Yandex indexer gives the highest priority to those web resources that may contain the answers to the most widespread user queries. For instance, queries based on the Latin alphabet comprise only about 12-15% of the total number of everyday queries in Yandex.
