Yandex.News: 25% of news in the Runet are copy and paste

Yandex.News service has recently published the results of the research devoted to the professional mass media of the Runet – websites whose materials are written in Russian by the editorial stuff of these cites. In the process of the research both online versions of traditional mass media and online mass media proper were taken into consideration. The research covered the period from September 2010 to January 2011.

In the course of the research Yandex.News service calculated that as of January 2011 mass media on the Internet published not less than 50 000 pieces of news in Russian every working day, and not less than 15 000 pieces of news at the weekend. About 60% of news messages in the Russian-speaking segment of the Internet are generated by Russian online mass media, 22% - by Ukrainian, about 9% of news pieces are published by online mass media of the former USSR republics, the rest of the messages account for the mass media from abroad.

According to the results of this research the biggest number of messages is generated by the news agencies – 37 publications a day upon the average. As of January 2011 an average Russian online mass medium released 13 messages a day, for the Ukrainian mass media the number of messages equaled 21.

According to the data as of autumn 2010 the most serious and important events found a response in the online mass media in half an hour after they had occurred. Less appreciable events and incidents were covered in the mass media several hours later.

The research of Yandex.News revealed that as to autumn 2010 almost 25% of the news stream consisted of copy and paste – news and messages that are practically 100% identical to the materials that have already been published in other online mass media. In 10% of cases duplicated news were followed by the link referring to the primary source, and in 15% of cases the links were not stated.

According to the results of the research the most cited sources are such news agencies as Russian International News Agency (RIA Novosti), Interfax, and the Information Telegraph Agency of Russia (ITAR-TASS).
