Stop words and search engine optimization

Precise search engine algorithms are kept secret, and only a small circle of trusted employees has precise knowledge in this area. However, there are general operating principles of the search engines, that are used as a basis by search engine optimization of websites. Some words are not indexed by the search engines, i.e. are simply ignored, by virtue of their specific peculiarities. These words are called stop words or noise words.

Stop words and search engines

Most of the stop words are functional parts of speech: prepositions, conjunctions and interjections. Search engines ignore such words to save place on their servers and quicken the process of information search.

While performing the search the search engine excludes the stop words from the query and replace them with a special symbol – a marker. Speeding-up of the process of information search is carried out due to the reductions of the number of rounds, i.e. operations of search by each of the words in the query. Thus, if all words, that have no sense load, are excluded from the search query, unnecessary operations of search by these words are not performed, and the search process becomes quicker.

In some cases, when the stop word is important for the user query, you can make the search engine take it into account during the search. For this purpose you should use “+” sign in the search query – it stands for the logical “and”.

Stop words and site indexing

Stop words are not taken into account during the indexing of site pages, that is why presence of the stop words in the meta tags is undesirable.

Each search engine has an individual set of stop words. Along with the functional parts of speech stop words often include such combinations of symbols as http, www, .com etc that have become very widespread on the Internet.
