Web development: how to install AppServ?AppServ is a free open source solution stack for web developers. It is a package that contains Apache HTTP Server, PHP, MySQL, and phpMyAdmin. With the help of AppServ you can install all these components simultaneously and start testing your website on your local computer without any access to the Internet.

How to install AppServ? It is very easy. First of all you have to download the AppServ distributive from the official website of the project. The latest stable version is AppServ 2.5.10, and AppServ is 2.6.0 is a Rock function with MySQL 6.0.4-alpha and PHP 6.0.0-dev.

To install AppServ you should click on the distributive file twice to launch the Setup Wizard. We advise that you close all other applications before you install AppServ, so that the Setup Wizard will be able to update relevant system files, and you won't have to reboot your computer.

Click Next to continue and read the License Agreement. AppServ is an open source application distributed under GNU GPL License, thus it is free to copy, distribute and modify. However, separate components of the solution stack may have other license terms. If you agree for the license term click Next to proceed. If you disagree click Cancel – the installation will be terminated.

Then you have to choose the destination folder. AppServ default install location is C:\\AppServ. If you need to select another destination folder click the browse button and choose another destination for AppServ. Having selected the location click Next to proceed to the following step.

The next step is components selection. There are four components in the AppServ package:

  • Apache HTTP Server;
  • MySQL database;
  • PHP Hypertext Preprocessor;
  • phpMyAdmin.

You should select the components you need and clear the components you don't want to install by clicking at the corresponding check box. Having completed choosing click Next to proceed.

The following step is Apache HTTP Server configuration. You should specify server name, admin Email address, and HTTP port for the web server (default port: 80). Then click Next to go to MySQL server configuration. At this stage you should:

  • enter the root password for your MySQL database and re-enter it;
  • specify the character sets and collations;
  • check the Old Password Support (PHP MySQL API function) if you have problems when coding PHP code with Old MySQL API;
  • check the Enable InnoDB option if you use InnoDB.

Click Next to complete AppServ setup. The Install Wizard witll ask for start MySQL and Apache immediately. Uncheck these options if necessary and click Finish to complete the setup. Installation complete! Have you made sure that it is very easy to install AppServ?
